Virtual and Augmented Reality, more commonly known as VR and AR are the future of technology. The concept of immersing yourself in a world that is completely different from the one that we live in sounds compelling. Facebook had already stepped into the VR game by purchasing Oculus in 2014. But that was just the start. And the news of Mark Zuckerberg planning to develop the “Metaverse” came as a surprise to no one.
The Metaverse is a world built-in virtual reality. It is a collection of several different environments and experiences built inside a Virtual World. Mark Zuckerberg believes Metaverse to be the future and a replacement to the Mobile Internet.
“You can think about the Metaverse as an embodied internet, where instead of just viewing content — you are in it,” Mark Zuckerberg explained in an interview with The Verge last week.
Facebook is now looking to create a product team that will be entirely dedicated to turning this vision of their CEO into a reality. This new team will work as a part of Facebook’s existing virtual reality group. The Virtual Reality group has already developed the Oculus VR headsets and is working on making AR glasses.
Facebook has already dumped a lot of money into VR and AR, and Metaverse is the next big step for the social media company. Mark said to The Verge ” If we do this well, I think over the next five years or so … we will effectively transition from people seeing us as primarily being a social media company to being a metaverse company.”
The Metaverse is no longer a fancy new thing in the world of technology as companies like Google, Apple, and Epic are working towards making their version of the Metaverse. But Facebook and Mark Zuckerberg might have the best chance of pulling this off.
Metaverse, like every other new technology project, is prone to failure. We have seen many different technologies fail to realize their potential, so being skeptical is okay. But small chunks of brilliance here and there have led people to believe that Facebook’s Metaverse might very well be a big revolution.
