The Hong Guang Mini is a small, body electric car. A stark from the sleek, speedy machines from prestige EV companies such as Tesla, it offers a range of distinct features at a very low price. And that has been the secret behind its success. Talking statistically, Tesla has the best-selling electric vehicle in the world right now in the form of the Model 3, however, in China, the Hong Guang has been outselling the Tesla Model 3 at almost 2:1! One of the major selling points of the rival car is the fact that it only costs $4,500! In the October of last year, Tesla cut the price of the Model 3 in China by 8%, making it possible to buy one there for as little as $36,805. That still seems pretty expensive compared to $4,500.
The Hong Guang(Mini EV) uses a 9.2kWh battery offering a range of around 75 miles and relies on a single electric motor capable of 17.4 horsepower and a top speed of 62mph. It can seat up to four people, but I doubt anyone would want to attempt using the Mini EV for a long journey based on how small it is. Its size is one of the many trade-offs for such a low price. BBC reports also show how the Mini EV is proving very popular in China not only because of the low price but because of the one big incentive the Chinese government offers. It can take people years to get a license plate for gas-powered vehicles in China, but the government is guaranteeing a free license plate with every electric vehicle purchase as an incentive.
The Hong Guang Mini EV saw sales of up to 112,000 for the second half of 2020, ranking it only second behind Tesla’s Model 3 which is made in its Shanghai factory. It is now believed to be the second-best-selling electric vehicle worldwide behind the Model 3.
