This has happened with all of us, one messages their friend that they want a certain product or one searches for that product on Google, and within an hour that individual ends up getting an advertisement of the same product on Instagram. This right product endorsement at the right time has made their revenue go up to $20 billion!
While being on social media, not much privacy is granted, Instagram will know if you’re looking to make a big purchase like a car, or if you’re stalking your crush in the middle of the night, however, there are some preventative measures one can take to ensure some sort of privacy.
Firstly one can delete some data, like search history which can be deleted through security menu options but Instagram says “Keep in mind that clearing your search history is temporary and that searches you clear may reappear in your history after you search for them again,”. Other than search history, one can delete contacts if they have uploaded any.
Another preventative measure one can take is disabling location, which can easily be done from settings of the phone from app permissions for android and for iPhone go to Privacy and then Location Services. Location is turned on usually for location filters, or on the stores when people add their location.
