Citizen Lab has reported a massive iPhone hack of journalists at the news organization called Al Jazeera. 36 hacks were reported and the attack was traced back to the software made by Israeli security company NSO group.
Pegasus technology is the software involved in the attack and it has been traced to be under the operation for separate entities. Citizen Lab has “medium confidence” that one of the entities is under the operation of the UAE and the other for the Saudi government.
This attack was very troubling in the aspects of exposure of sensitive information. There is also a rise in technology hacks like this that are becoming harder to stop. For now, Israeli firm NSO group has refused to accept any involvement with the attack and it has been said that this report was based on “speculation” alone.
The Attack using the hacking software was dubbed into “Kismet” which is a zero-click tool which means there needs to be no involvement or any kind of response from the victims for the attack to happen and to disappear without a trace when all the work is done. Citizen Lab report also says that all the iPhones without the IOS 14 update are potential victims of the hack.
This information has reached Apple and they seem to be investigating this as well. Now, Citizen Lab is still looking into the issue and calling for more precautions to avoid any further hacks and to be protected against the misuse as much as possible.
